Best 0800 and 020 numbers for UK law firms — credibility on the letterhead
Why most UK law firms run 020 or 03 rather than 0800, when 0800 actually wins, and how to pick a number that pays back over the 20-year life of a partnership without looking like a claims line.
A law firm’s phone number lives on letterhead, on the front of a building, on email signatures and on court paperwork for the working life of the partnership. It will outlast the website, the practice management system, and most of the partners. It deserves ten minutes of thought.
For most UK law firms the answer is not 0800. The answer is a clean geographic number — 020 in London, 0161 in Manchester, 0117 in Bristol — with a memorable but restrained tail. There are firms for which 0800 wins, and we’ll cover those, but the default leans geographic.
Why geographic still wins on letterhead
Clients hiring a solicitor are buying credibility as much as they are buying service. A London 020 number signals an actual London office. A Manchester 0161 number signals an actual Manchester presence. 0800 says nothing about where you are, and on a partnership letterhead that absence is mildly suspicious in a way it isn’t on a takeaway flyer.
The signal has held for decades and it’s held even as the actual cost of calling 020 from a mobile has crept up. Clients don’t price-shop the call. They’re reading the number as a gravitas signal.
Geographic patterns that work for law firms
Clean tails on a London 020 / regional 0161 / 0117
- 020 7100 1000 — repeating-block. Authoritative.
- 0161 200 2000 — local repeating-block. Reads as “established Manchester firm”.
- 0117 200 1000 — clean Bristol tail.
- 0141 100 1000 — Glasgow.
The pattern is: STD code, three-digit block that doesn’t embarrass itself, then a tail that mirrors or zeroes out. Memorable when read aloud once, but doesn’t feel like an advert.
National 03 numbers for multi-office firms
0345 or 0344 numbers cost the caller the same as 01/02 calls and are included in mobile bundles. They’re a fair choice for a firm with several offices that doesn’t want to over-signal any one location. They lack the geographic punch but they don’t carry the claims-line baggage of 0800 either.
When 0800 is the right choice
- Legal-aid and pro-bono intake lines. Free-to-call is a feature, not noise. A 0800 number says “we will not charge you to ask for help”.
- Consumer personal injury, no-win-no-fee, ATE-funded work. Inbound volumes here are high enough that the recall lift of a memorable 0800 pays back across the working life of every billboard and sponsorship.
- National conveyancing and probate intake. Volume consumer work where the firm is competing on accessibility, not postcode.
- Out-of-hours emergency lines. A clean memorable 0800 published alongside the geographic main line for clients in crisis.
For these the 0800 sits alongside the geographic main number, not instead of it. The letterhead carries the gravitas number; the consumer billboard carries the 0800.
Patterns to avoid on a law-firm number
- Keypad-spelled words. 0800 LAWYER and similar — fine for a high-volume claims line, wrong for a firm trying to signal seriousness.
- Long repeating runs of single digits. 0800 88 88 88 is a great number for many businesses, but it reads as “ad spend” on a partnership letterhead.
- 084 / 087 numbers. These cost the caller more. For a regulated profession in 2026, charging callers a service fee to reach you is a bad look. Avoid for any new firm number.
Practical points the procurement department forgets
- Buy the number outright. A firm’s number is a 25-year asset. Rental on a memorable number compounds against you. Our Members own the numbers — paid once, kept forever, ported with you if you ever leave.
- Port the existing number first. A 30-year-old geographic number that’s been on the deeds is worth more to the firm than any memorable new one. Port it before you change provider, then layer a memorable line on top if you want.
- Know who actually holds the range. Your number is allocated by Ofcom to a Communications Provider. If your supplier is a reseller, the number is held one or two layers above them. See carrier vs reseller — relevant the day you decide to move.
Where NumberGroup fits
We hold our number ranges directly under Ofcom’s Numbering Plan, we publish prices openly, and a UK person answers when you ring. For a law firm that wants the number on the letterhead to last as long as the partnership, that combination is more valuable than another quid off the per-minute rate.
